Common Cold and Flu Symptoms We Can Assess

Cold and flu symptoms can overlap with other respiratory infections, which means it is not always possible to tell what is causing your illness simply by looking at the symptoms. Manitoba notes that respiratory infections such as influenza and COVID-19 can be difficult to distinguish based on symptoms alone.

Our physicians can assess a range of common symptoms, including:

Fever and Chills Fever can occur with influenza and other infections. If your fever persists, returns after improving, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, medical assessment may be appropriate.
Cough A cough can accompany a common cold, influenza, and other respiratory infections. We can assess a persistent or worsening cough alongside your other symptoms.
Sore Throat Throat discomfort can occur with several respiratory illnesses. Our physicians can assess your symptoms and determine whether further evaluation or treatment may be appropriate.
Congestion and Runny Nose Nasal congestion and a runny nose are common with colds and other respiratory infections. Persistent or worsening symptoms may warrant medical assessment.
Body Aches and Headache Influenza can begin suddenly and may cause muscle aches, headaches, chills, and significant tiredness.
Fatigue and Weakness Feeling unusually tired can accompany respiratory infections. If weakness is significant or your condition is getting worse, it is worth speaking with a healthcare professional.
Flu-Like Symptoms When several symptoms appear together, particularly fever, cough, body aches, chills, and fatigue, our physicians can assess the overall picture rather than focusing on one symptom alone.
Respiratory Symptoms in Children Children can experience many of the same symptoms as adults, while some may also experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea with influenza.

When Should You See a Doctor for Cold or Flu Symptoms?

Many people with uncomplicated respiratory infections recover at home with rest, fluids, and time. However, symptoms can sometimes become more severe or take a turn after initially improving.

Consider having your symptoms assessed if:

  • Your symptoms are getting worse rather than gradually improving
  • A fever persists or returns after you seemed to be getting better
  • Your cough is becoming more severe or persistent
  • You are experiencing significant weakness or fatigue
  • You are having difficulty managing your usual activities because of your symptoms
  • You are concerned about dehydration
  • You have a chronic health condition that could make respiratory illness more concerning
  • You are pregnant or otherwise at increased risk of complications
  • Your child is unwell and you are concerned about their symptoms
  • New or worsening symptoms develop after an initial improvement

Manitoba recommends monitoring for new or worsening symptoms, including fever, cough, headache, and breathing difficulties, and advises people to contact a healthcare provider if they begin to feel worse.

Some people have a higher risk of complications from influenza, including adults aged 65 and older, children under five, people with chronic health conditions, pregnant individuals, and certain other groups.

If you are at higher risk of severe illness, it is particularly important to seek medical advice early. For some people with influenza, antiviral treatment may be appropriate, and Manitoba notes that treatment is most effective when started as early as possible, ideally within the first two days of symptoms.

Cold and Flu Care for the Whole Family

Respiratory illnesses do not affect everyone in exactly the same way. A healthy adult may recover without complications, while a young child, older adult, pregnant individual, or someone with a chronic health condition may require closer attention.

At South Pembina Walk-In Clinic, our family medicine physicians provide care for patients of different ages. We can assess your symptoms in the context of your health history and help you understand what to do next.

Our family-focused approach can be helpful when:

  • Your Child Is Sick:Children can develop respiratory symptoms quickly, and parents may have questions about fever, cough, sore throat, congestion, or changes in behaviour and energy.
  • You Are Caring for an Older Adult:Older adults can be at greater risk of complications from influenza, making timely medical advice particularly important when symptoms develop.
  • You Have a Chronic Condition:Respiratory infections can sometimes worsen existing health conditions. Let our physicians know about your medical history so we can consider your overall health when assessing your symptoms.
  • You Are Pregnant:Pregnancy is one of the factors associated with increased risk of influenza complications. If you develop flu-like symptoms during pregnancy, speak with your healthcare provider about appropriate care.
  • Several Family Members Are Sick:Respiratory infections can spread easily between people in the same household. If more than one family member becomes unwell, we can help assess appropriate patients and advise you about the next steps.

Concerned about a family member's symptoms? Bring your questions to our physicians.
